Your First Time Will Be Awkward

And why it’s okay.

Click-bait-y title? Okay fine, maybe a little. But also not. For most people, the first time we try anything new, it’s bound to be a bit clunky. Even if you are a “natural” at something, it is going to take some time before you feel entirely comfortable with it.

This is perfectly normal and to be expected. Whether you’re learning how to drive, how to swim, or how to excel at your first job, it’s going to take time and practice before you start to feel like you really know what you’re doing.

Here are some tips to help you get through life’s uncomfortable experiences as a newbie at anything.

It’s totally okay to suck.

At first. It’s okay to be bad at something when you haven’t tried it before. The important thing is to remember that no matter how bad you are at something, you can only get better. Once you accept the likelihood of a learning curve, you’ll realize that being bad at first isn’t the worst thing in the world.

Have realistic expectations for yourself (and others).

Don’t expect perfection. Don’t set arbitrary timelines for when you should accomplish what, especially at the very beginning. Pace yourself, and see how things play out before knowing…
