One Quick Way To Tell If Your Writing Is Crap
So I’ve been writing on Medium for a while now.
I’ve found that there is one good way to tell whether or not something I’ve just written is basically a piece of garbage.
It’s super quick. I ask myself one question:
Was it fun to write?
Simple yes or no.
If my fingers flew across the keys as my ideas came naturally, it’s a good sign.
If I can think faster than I can type, it’s a great sign.
And if I’m writing because something hit a nerve and I just couldn’t not write about it…it’s either really, really awful or about to be my top earning piece for the quarter.
But — if I find myself staring at a blank screen all backspace-happy and struggling to get a decent sentence out, I eventually close my laptop and go for a walk.
If something isn’t fun for me to write, I don’t bank on it being fun for anyone else to read.
New writers try to write what they *think* the people want.
I get it. You want to views, to be in the $100 club, and to grow your following.
