Not Every Breakup Has To Feel Like A Divorce

Advice for young hearts on how to build a lasting love.

An acquaintance of mine married her high school boyfriend three months after graduation.

(High school graduation.)

I know this is common in some cultures, but where I come from and in the generation I grew up in, isn’t common at all.

The two of them had been dating for a year or two at that point. Their marriage lasted another year or two (before they called it quits).

About five years and one divorce later, I heard through the grapevine that the guy is seeing someone else now. The girl seems to be enjoying her single life.

I hope they’re both doing well.

I don’t know any other twenty-one-year-old divorcees, but I do know plenty of young people who have lived through an emotional divorce.

This happens when practical children make life-altering decisions with little more consideration than their hearts…and hormones.

Especially in high school and college, young couples deeply invest in one another without conversing about many things that can make or break a marriage. Complex and nuanced…
