I'm sorry that you had to experience this growing up. It really does sound painful, frustrating, and deeply scarring. However, I will say, I don't think the religion of Catholicism itself is to blame. With many world religions (not just Catholicism) the true message and beauty behind that religion is corrupted or distorted by imperfect people who claim to be following that religion.

I also think that misinterpretations and lack of understanding of many religious teachings can do more harm than good. This is not to invalidate your negative experiences, though I don't believe that religion in and of itself is to blame for the corrupt actions of people who claim to practice it. (Especially when their actions go against what that religion actually teaches.)
